R.E.A.D PLUS PROGRAM
(READING EARLY ACCELERATES DEVELOPMENT)
Available to Wyoming families who have children with hearing loss ages birth to kindergarten.
Participants in the R.E.A.D Plus Program will learn “book sharing” strategies, have the opportunity to learn to incorporate sign language while reading/sharing books with their child.
Participants in the R.E.A.D Plus Program will also receive support to understand their child’s hearing loss and understand the potential impact of the hearing loss on their child. Participants will be empowered with strategies to support their child’s speech and language development.
Participants of the R.E.A.D Plus Program will have the opportunity to complete a LENA (Language ENvironment Analysis) as well as participate in the NECAP (National Early Childhood Assessment Project).
- The R.E.A.D Plus Program is provided free of charge through Wyoming Families for Hands & Voices in collaboration with the Wyoming Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (EHDI). Sessions are provided via technology 1-2 times per month at the family’s convenience
- Books are provided by The Wyoming Department of Education Outreach Library Services for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Sign language vocabulary picture reference sheets are provided for each book and for daily routines
- Participating families can invite anyone to their R.E.A.D Plus sessions. Early Intervention Providers are encouraged to attend R.E.A.D. Plus sessions
My name is Susan Fischer and I am a speech language pathologist with 20+ years of experience working with children with a variety needs including children with hearing loss. I am honored to be a part of Wyoming Families for Hands and Voices and excited about the READ Plus Program.
My role is to provide guidance to families to understand their child’s hearing loss, understand the possible impact of the hearing loss on their child’s development and to teach strategies related to language development, speech development, device use and so much more! If interested, families in the READ Plus Program are also taught to use sign language while reading books with their child and during daily routines.
